Would you like to improve your skills and feel confident to tackle more jobs yourself? As part of our “Share and Repair” goal, we want to share some of the skills so that more people can benefit.
We are starting a series of very short easy workshops to help everyone, particularly anyone who thinks “I couldn’t possibly do that!” So many of the little jobs around the house are well within the ability of virtually everyone, and yet if you have never seen it done, no wonder it looks complicated. Come and learn the magic!
We are planning courses on:
- Putting up a shelf
- Repairing a jacket
- Getting the most out of your sewing machine
- Replacing a fuse and changing a plug
- Replacing a lock
- Anything else? We are open to suggestions of what skills we should share
Each course will be held at the Old Parcels Office in the middle of Havant and last no more than an hour and a half and by the end of it, you will have learned how to do something new and you will have the practical experience to go home and do it for yourself. Absolutely no prior knowledge or experience is needed and all the materials and tools for each topic will be provided by us. So please come along and discover how much you can do.

Putting up a shelf
This will include using a power drill, drilling safely, and avoiding pipes and cables, selecting the best size of screws and the sort of fixing to use for different types of wall, and how to put the shelf up straight and securely.
By the way, if you haven’t got a power drill, or some of the other tools you might need, you can always borrow them from the Library of Things!
Repairing a jacket
This will include…

Getting the most from your sewing machine

Replacing a lock
If you lose your keys, or you’re worried that someone else may have a key to your home, it is very easy to change the small part of a lock that needs changing in order to have a new set of keys.
This will cover all of that and explain the different types of locks and how to replace and maintain them.
By the way, if you haven’t got some of the tools you might need, you can always borrow them from the Library of Things!

Replacing a fuse and changing a plug

Electricity doesn’t have to be scary! Yes, it needs to be treated with respect, but that doesn’t mean you can’t tackle simple jobs and this course will aim to show you how to do that.
It will include advice on which fuse to use, what to do if it keeps blowing, what to check when you are changing a plug, and why you may sometimes need to. It will also cover a very basic idea of understanding electricity and electrical appliances so that you can use them with confidence and know better what has happened if something goes wrong.
